(Witness) Biography1846 He witnessed the biography of (?) Rathbone Brothers: William III, inherited his father's business and built it into a major international trading company. The younger Rathbone continued the local timber trading business, but extended its activities to encompass a wider range, adding new goods, and especially, new foreign trading routes. By the end of the century, the Rathbone family counted among the most prominent of Liverpool's rising shipping industry. William III was later joined by his son, William IV.2

During 1780's and 1790's, the Rathbones' business changed from a timber and general merchanting business to one specialising in trade with America. The company imported the fisrt cotton from America to England in 1798.
 
Residence*1809 M; William & Hannah Mary were the first RATHBONEs to live at "Greenbank", which was then part of Toxteth Park, Liverpool. It was leased at first, but then purchased in 1809, the year of William’s death.
