"AN ENGLISH SPOOK With the approach of Christmastide a weird "spook" story became current in Anslow, three miles from Burton, England. It is receiving the close attention of the police, who, however, are baffled in their investigations. Park farm is an isolated homestead occupied by a widow 'named Thompstone, who has residing with her a brother and several domestics. For some days, towards the end of October, loud and mysterious knocking was heard at each door of the house in turn, and although close observation was kept, both inside and out, no human agency was visible. So distraught was Mrs. Thompstone at the persistent knocking that she drove over to Burton and enlisted the aid of the police, who watched the house inside and out. On one occasion an officer held the latch of a door which the mysterious agency seemed to favour for an hour and a half and just as he released his hold, his patience exhausted, the knocking recurred. The officer darted out, but nobody was to be seen. It is stated that when the blows, which resemble those of a hammer, are rained on the door the .latter does not vibrate in the least. The whole village is perturbed, and the occupants of the farmhouse are quite unnerved."12 |

| Biography* | 1887 | Bosley railway station served the village of Bosley, Cheshire. The station was opened by the North Staffordshire Railway in September 1849 as part of the Churnet Valley line. The station was some distance from the village which is was linked to by a footpath. To travel between the village and the station by road was a much longer journey. The main customer of the station was the corn mill belonging to Francis R Thompstone & Sons Ltd which was situated next to the station. Thompstones also had their own 2 ft 6 in (762 mm) tramway which ran for 0.75 miles (1.21 km) from the mill to the Macclesfield Canal and was used for transporting corn from the canal to the mill. The tramway opened in 1887 and closed around 1925. Remains of the track can still just be seen in a shallow cutting through woodland, leading to the old transhipment dock, just below Bosley bottom lock. Bosley station remained open until passenger services were withdrawn from the northern end of the Churnet valley line (North Rode – Leek) in 1960. Freight services lasted until 1964 when they too were withdrawn and the track lifted.12 |
